  1. I am reading The Watsons go to Birmingham. This book is about a family whose oldest son gets in trouble in their town of Michigan. They decide to live with their grandma for the summer in Birmingham, Alabama during
the 60s. They decided to stay longer and go to school in Birmingham. This book is exciting, funny, and realistic. - Payton

  4. This is Fiona Bakshi, I'm in sixth grade, and I am reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I am enjoying this book a lot, and one thing I enjoy the most is how interesting the events that take place happen. J.K. Rowling did a good job of keeping the reader hooked and wanting to read more. I like the new characters that have been added, and their personalities.

I like this book because of all the new characters like Professor Umbridge and how she is a terrible teacher. I think J.K. 8. I am reading "Pax" by Sara Pennypacker. This story is about a friendship between Peter and a fox, Pax. In the story, you get to see how they bond, and what it is like for Peter to have a best friend that's a fox. I like this book because some of the chapters are written from Peter's point of view, but some are written from Pax's point of view. This allows me to understand the story, and how the characters are feeling better.

This is very confusing for him and he has to find out how to deal with this new change! He is trying to stay as normal as possible. He soon befriends Emily, a blind girl who’s very shocked when she hears about bobby and his condition. I like this book because it shows how friendship is very important!

  11. I am reading the book Eagle Blue, it is about an Alaskan basketball team. This book takes place in a town called Fort Yukon, in this town kids and adults experience manny addictions like smoking and drinking. The team has many kids that are constantly struggling in school because they don't care and only go to school to play basketball. Basketball is the glue keeping the town together as even though it takes a lot of money to keep running, without it the town would be most likely gone, abandoned with only smoking and drinking addicts left to come by. The coach Dave and principle Doc constantly harp on character and attitude that will make the kids life better. I suggest this book because it opens your eyes up to different types of lives certain people have or want to live in.

I'm reading the book A Long Walk To Water. A Long Walk To Water is a dual narrative book about two African children in Sudan. One of the stories is about how a boy in 1985 has to run away from his village and family because of a war. The other story is about an eleven year old girl in 2008 who has to walk eight hours every day to bring her family water that is contaminated and not safe to drink. A Long Walk To Water has excellent character development that shows they grow more mature with each adversity they face. Overall, I really enjoy this book and recommend it to my classmates.

  20. The book that I am reading is called "Beyond the Bright Sea" by Lauren Wolk. I enjoy reading this book because it makes you feel like you are right next to the characters. It also builds a lot of suspense. The main character's name is Crow and she was sent on a boat in the middle of the sea when she was only a few hours old. She washed up on an island and a boy names Osh found her. Osh was the only person on the island so he took care of Crow. I enjoy reading this book because it is well written and it is very descriptive. I highly recommend reading this book!

At the end, it was a little confusing, but I re-read it, and it was SUPER interesting. There are some shocking plot twists that make an awesome dramatic effect, and are a great way to wrap up this book. I was practically bouncing off of the walls with joy when I finished this book because this is one more step closer to finishing the series. I was also happy that I read a book that had more than about 400-500 pages. I can't wait to start reading the next book in the series (after I finish the other book I chose for summer reading).

  33. I am almost to the end of my book, Long Way Down. So far it's about an African American, 15 year old boy, named Will and his brother Shawn who gets shot. There are 3 rules in their neighborhood, no crying, no snitching, and get revenge. When getting revenge people are expected to kill the person they think killed their family member. Will struggles with figuring out whether he is capable of shooting his brother's killer or not. He pulls out the gun and goes on an elevator when he starts seeing ghosts of people he knew who died before. I think this book is very interesting, suspenseful, and has a lot of detail in each chapter. I am excited to see how it will end.

  34. I just finished my first book, Long Way Down, and I highly recommend to anyone who likes reading gripping and powerful books. In the first comment I made on the book, I explained how there are 3 rules followed in the neighborhood. No crying, no snitching, and get revenge. When Will gets in the elevator to go shoot his brother's killer, he sees dead people from the past on each floor such as his dad who was killed when Will was a baby. Once he gets to the last floor he sees someone special to him. But that someone won't talk to him until his final words as the elevator reaches the final ground but Will does not know whether he can get out of it or not.

  36. I got myself into a reading challenge and I had to read 15 books, so this is just going to be one BIGGG post about all of them.
#1 Among the hidden: This book is about a third child named Luke Garner who lives in a society where third children are illegal and the only punishment is death.
#2 Among the Imposters: This book is about Luke Garner going to school for the first time ever.(in the end of the previous book he got a fake id which means he can go into the world like a normal child)It is about him adjusting to the world and during this book Luke finds out that some are not as trustworthy as they seem
#3 Among the Betrayed: This is about a girl named Nina Idi, she is also a third child and she get arrested for pretending to be a population police agent when in reality she is a third children simply betraying other third children. This however is not true and Nina is actually a good person who simply got betrayed by the other imposter in the last book and now Nina is held in prison. She gets an offer to betray some other third children but instead she runs away with them. The whole books is about running away and in the end Nina finds out that the guard who was imprisoning her is actually a good person and is fighting against the population police
#4: Among The Barons: This book comes back to Luke. It is about his fake brother Smits Grant coming to school with him.(it's his fake brother cause of the fake id)In the end the parents meet their end by a falling chandelier and Oscar(Smits bodyguard)turns out to be someone working against the population police
#5 Among the Brave: Trey who is a friend of Luke's finds himself in a predicament. Luke is captured by the population police and brought to population police headquarters as well as some other friends.Trey meets one of Luke's real brothers and goes out on a mission to find his friends! In the end they do, and they rescued Mr. Talbot as well. In this book, however they realize that the evil leader, Aldous, who is the leader of the population police, is now president and has all the power.
#6 Among the Enemy: Matthias (which is one of the people Nina was to betray) is in trouble. His friend which he could almost call his sister is severely hurt as well as his other friend who is basically his brother. He goes for help from some of this friends and tries to find his hurt friends.(their names are Percy and Alia) However, when they arrive the population police comes. Luckily there were some rebels waiting for a perfect ambush on the population police officers. Matthias for some reason decides to save one of them and is now a "trusted" ally of population police. He sabotages the population police and when the officer who he saved dies, one of the officers friends Mike comes and takes care of Matthias. In the end Matthias finds out Mike was actually an under cover agent and they find a way to destroy all fake id's so that 3rd children are temporarily safe.
#7 Among the Free:This book is about Luke again. It is about Luke setting off a rebellion to overthrow the population police. However, when everyone is FINALLY free. Everyone does not seem to know what to do.Eventually some people started saying that the population police were good and should be brought back. But in the end Luke musters up the courage to say otherwise. And then it is official and a new government is formed. A good government
That's the end of the shadow children series so here are some other random books I read
#8 The island of the blue dolphins: An indian girl's homeland(which is an island) is attacked by some other tribe. The girl’s tribe flees by boat but she is left behind. This book is about how this girl survives on the island for over 18 years. I think it is a really good book and I recommend it.
#9 The Enormous egg: This book is about how this chicken laid a really big egg. Later in the book, a boy named Nate found out that it was a dinosaur egg! This book is all about how Nate took care of his pet dinosaur and the challenges he faced along the way.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I had to split them up into 2 posts because it was too many characters for the website to handle.
#10 Out of my Mind: I actually re-read this book because I did not have any other books. This book is about a disabled girl who cannot talk or walk or really move anything besides her thumbs. The thing is that she is really smart and she can't share any knowledge with anyone around her. One day, she finally finds a way to tell her parents that she wants this computer that will let her talk, eventually she finds it and she gets to be like a normal kid. The main thing about this book is how she gets into the whiz kids competition. It is a competition for really smart kids and she is in it!
#11 Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1: This book is about a half-blood (half god half human) who finds himself on the brink of a war. The master bolt of Zeus (the most powerful weapon in all of existence) has been stolen by someone and Zeus blamed it on Percy (Percy is the half-blood). This book is all about Percy and his journey on the way to find the master bolt and retrieve it to Zeus. He took his friends named Annabeth and Grover on the trip with him.
#12 Percy Jackson and the Olympians #2: In the previous book, Percy safely retrieves the master bolt and gives it to Zeus. Percy also found out he has a half-brother named Tyson who is a cyclops. At first, this gets him bullied a lot but eventually everyone stops. In this book, this tree that is protecting the camp (camp half-blood which is where Percy and most other half-bloods go so that they are safe from monsters) is poisoned and the only way to save it is to get the golden fleece which heals every living thing. (by the way, this person named Thalia died where that tree is and she sort of saved Annabeth and this other guy named Luke which I will get to soon, when she died her father Zeus took pity on her and found a way for her to live, becoming a tree. Now this tree makes a border around the camp and no monsters can get in.) However, they have to travel to the sea of monsters in order to get it, and that is no easy task. In the end, they get it but the fleece does its magic too well and Thalia actually comes back to life. That is a bad thing because there is this prophecy that states that a 16 year old of the big 3 (Zeus, Poseidon, Hades) will either save or destroy Olympus and since Thalia is older than Percy, that means that the prophecy is closer to coming true.
#13 Percy Jackson and the Olympians #3: This book starts off with Percy and his friends looking for other half-bloods to recruit to the camp. While he was doing this, a monster attacks and takes Annabeth as a prisoner. Then Artemis (goddess of the moon) tells her hunters (she recruits half-bloods to become hunters and serve her) that she needs to go hunting for this dangerous monsters. Then she leaves and when she does not come back, some of her hunters go searching for her. Percy being Percy, decided that he needed to go on an adventure. So he did and then in the end, he finds out that Artemis is holding up the sky (and I mean literally) and that Atlas who is a Titan (Titans used to rule before the gods)is freed from having to hold up the sky since he made Artemis take his place. Then he finds out that Annabeth is being imprisoned. ( I forget how though) So in the end, 2 hunters die and since he made this promise to one of the hunter's brother that he will keep her safe, the brother (who's name is Nico) Is now really angry and Percy finds himself with the son of Hades for an enemy. Also, Artemis asked Thalia to join the hunters (Artemis got freed and now Atlas is holding the sky up again) because they never age, so she won't turn 16. She did it and now Percy is the only one who can be the one in the prophecy.

  38. I had to do it in 3 because I wrote a lot for the 14th one
#14 Percy Jackson and the Olympians #4: Before I get to this, I need to explain a bit. Luke is this guy, who used to help train at the camp but in the end of the first book, he turned bad. And Kronos is the evil Titan lord who used to be supreme ruler before the gods. And Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades are the sons of Kronos. And the Labyrinth is this really big place created by this inventor named Daedalus that takes you pretty much anywhere in the world. And in the last book, Percy met this mortal that could see through the mist named Rachael. And the mist is this thing that makes Olympian things seem normal for mortals. For example, if there was a monster in front of a mortal, a mortal would see something normal like say, a creepy clown or something like that. Ok onto the book. In this book, Percy finds out that there is this entrance to the labyrinth in camp half-blood. That is bad because that means that Luke and his army can invade the camp. And you can't destroy it so basically he can just walk in. The thing is that the labyrinth is tricky and deceiving and it is really hard to navigate. However, there is this thing that guides you through it and the inventor has it. So this book is about Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson (and for a brief period, Nico. halfway through the book, he finally came to his senses and realized that his sister's death wasn't Percy's falt) trying to find the string (the magical guiding device) before Luke does. During the journey, Percy realized that Rachael could get them through the labyrinth no problem because even though half-bloods can see through the mist, the mist in the labyrinth is too strong. However, Rachael led them through. Then midway, Grover felt the presence of the wild god Pan who was thought to be dead. Grover and Tyson went looking for him. Eventually, Rachael found Daedalus' base and they realized that Daedalus was the new sword master at camp half-blood. They realized that he was right in front of them all along. (oh and by the way, Percy made a friend with Daedalus' pet hellhound)Then my memory is sort of blurry here, but I think Daedalus might have said that they already have the string. And then they found Grover and Tyson in the tunnels and witnessed Pan's death. (this part was sad:( because Grover was searching for Pan all his life) And then they realized Kronos was alive again, and then Percy made a volcano blow up which disturbed this monster Typhoon who is so powerful he could single handedly take down the gods. (or at least almost)Then in the end, since the labyrinth was tied to his life force, Daedalus killed himself (by the way Daedalus could have lived forever, since he has these robots that carry out his lifeline) and brought down the Labyrinth. Then Percy returned home for his birthday and for the first time in a while, Poseidon came to visit. Poseidon said that Typhoon is stirring and that he might awaken.

  39. The 14th book I read, had so many words, I could only fit it in one post. So I had to use 4 posts in total
#15 Percy Jackson and the Olympians #5: In this book, Nico has a plan for Percy, Percy needs to go get achilles curse which makes it so that he cannot die except if he is hit in the right spot. (they get to choose the spot)After a while they get it, and they go on to fight Kronos and his army. This book is all about fighting Kronos. Meanwhile, Typhoon awakened and literally every god is fighting him right now. Except Poseidon because there are some other creatures attacking his base. In this book, Percy got his dad's attention and told him to let the creatures win and to fight Typhoon instead. In the end, Typhoon was defeated because Poseidon willed the sea to rise and take Typhoon away. Also, Kronos was defeated because since it was still Luke's body, Annabeth got through to Luke and told him to stab himself in his Achilles spot (yes Luke/kronos got the curse too) so that Kronos was no longer in control. Luke ended up stabbing himself and saving the gods. I did not talk too much about this book because honestly, it was mostly just fighting. I could have mentioned a lot more, but the extra stuff isn't really too interesting. Still though, this series was soooo good and I definitely recommend it. That was the end of the 15 books and in return for completing the challenge, I got a sweater. Unfortunately it did not fit....

Unfortunately, her sister got sick from the water because it is contaminated, and they have to save her quickly. 48. I just started reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham. So far, the novel is really humorous. One really funny scene was on Page 12 when Kenny and Byron were cleaning the ice off the car, and all of a sudden, Kenny looks over and sees Byron’s lips stuck to the car. He’s saying “Keh-ee! Keh-ee! Hel’he…!” Kenny then ran inside, got his mom, and when everybody in the family realized what was happening, they were all scared, except for their dad. He was cracking up laughing so hard. The whole family was trying to think of solutions to get Byron’s lips off the cold, icy mirror. They finally came up with one solution; Kenny’s mom poured hot water onto the mirror. This was a bad idea because the water froze right as it hit the mirror. Byron’s mom had had enough, and put a scarf around his eyes and pulled as hard as she could. Byron’s lips came off. His lips were bleeding and his skin was peeled off. This was one of the funniest scenes. I recommend this book if you like humor!

  64. I am currently reading, "Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter." So far I am really enjoying this book! "Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" has been doing a really good job of tackling many societal issues that come up in our day to day, while still keeping with the story line to keep the readers as engaged as possible. This story did a great job at portraying the fact that some people are different then they seem. That there is more to a person than what you may see. The daughter Olga seems as if she is a perfect daughter, she does her chores, takes care of her family members, and goes to school. The only way it would be possible to see deeper into Olga, would be to look not just at what she represents herself as, and more so what she is on the inside. I feel that this story ties in with woman equality because for years upon years woman have been perceived by all, that they are lesser beings and do not deserve what men do. When really woman are strong, intelligent, curious, and have a lot to offer to this world. I am looking forward to seeing how this book progresses.

If you scroll up at the beginning of this book, I made and entry that was the complete opposite of this book. I thought that this book was confusing and boring, but I stand corrected! I have so many AMAZING things that I would absolutely love to share, but they would spoil the whole book! This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think that this book is (a bit) more interesting than Harry Potter Books. I am not saying ALL of them, but Percy Jackson is easily the most intriguing book(s) I have ever read! This book made me really happy inside that I finished it, and that I was reading it. My reasoning for that is because this book is just amazing and is so great that I feel accomplished that I found a book series that I like, and read this unique book. 88. The Watsons Go to Birmingham is a humorous book. If you like humor I recommend you read this book. One example of a funny scene in The Watsons Go to Birmingham is when Kenny and Byron figured out that they can get food for free at the grocery store. Byron was so happy! He said, “This is just too much all you gotta do is sign that stupid card, and that old fool Mitchell” ll give you what you want! Too, too much!” A few days after Byron and Kenny figured out that they can get food “for free”. Byron bought two bags of Swedish Creme cookies. Kenny saw Byron up in a tree and Byron asked if he wanted a cookie. Kenny was confused. He didn’t know why Byron was being so nice. He thought this was a trick. Kenny thought Byron put bugs in the cookies. He ate them anyway. Kenny later figured out that Byron ate one and a half bags of Swedish Crème cookies. A few minutes go by, and Byron runs over to the tree and starts throwing up. Then Byron told Kenny, “ Get the hell out of here, what you star’in at? Them apples got me sick, you little cross-eyed punk! Get out of here.” This funny scene from the Watsons Shows conflicts between brothers and how they can act to each other.

  91. I have just recently finished reading the book, Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. I really did think that this book did an excellent job at tackling a lot of problems we have in our society with woman rights, while staying on the storyline. I would definitely
recommend this book to a friend.

  92. I just finished reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham. Here are some important events that happened. First the whole Watson family drove up to Birmingham, Alabama where there Grandma lives. They did this because they were concerned about how Byron was acting. It was entertaining when they drove up there because the dad kept driving and didn’t follow the moms schedule. Next a bomb goes of in church where joey was suppose to be but was not there yet luckily. This part was sad because I thought joey died. Finally when Kenny is home again he looks into the mirror and starts to cry. It turns out that Kenny is bothered that the only thing he could save in that moment when he thought Joey died was a stupid shoe. Kenny was ashamed. In conclusion, The Watsons Go to Birmingham is a very humorous book but some parts of the book can be very serious.

  97. I started "A long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park is very good insight to what it was like to live in Southern Sudan in 1985 from a young boy named Salva's point of view. This was a time when there were rebels from Southern Sudan that sparked a war with the government.

  99. I am Half way done with "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park. Salvas' village was took over by the rebals and he was spit up from his family. He is forced to walk through the exhausting conditions of Serbia in the hopes of escaping the war, and getting to a better place. Along the way he meets some of his family and makes some friends in these painful times. So far I like how Linda sue Park really gives me a good idea of what it is like living in a warzone. So far I am very interested in this book.

  100. I finished reading the book "A long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park. This book is a sad story about how a war tore this young boy named Salva away from his family and everything he had, until he had nothing. Then how he persevered through things that no one should have to go through. Not only did he do that, but he also found success. I also like how the author put in a section before the start of the chapter of a young girl about how Salvas' actions effected the little girls life. I think this is truly a inspiring story that should not go unread by anyone.

  101. My second book “A Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds starts off with a sad beginning where Will’s older brother Sean gets shot and dies out of nowhere. He is left with lots of depression and anger and is seeking revenge. The start of the book really got my attention and I liked how it quickly jumped into the plot.

  102. After I finished the book "Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds it left me with lots of thoughts on the book. It was truly a very good book with lots of story to it and it was a very thrilling book. The book focuses on how the main character Will overcomes the death of his brother and keeps moving on in life. One great message I took from this book is that you often need to survive the bad things in life in order to get to the good things. Will proves that this is true when he reunites with his brother. That part of the story shocked me because it was totally unexpected after reading the beginning of the book.

  103. The other book I read was the falcon thief. This book is about a man named Jeffery Lendrum who is a bird smuggler. He apprehended at Britain’s Birmingham international airport. When exiting the shower room in one of the airport lounges was caught by a suspicious janitor. Who was shocked when the man had been in there for twenty minutes and when he walked in it looked like nothing had been touched. I don’t want to spoil anything but I highly recommend this book.
