What to post

 Summer Reading

Summer Experience

  • Read a minimum of two books from the suggested list or a book that has been approved by me.

  • Post to the blog 4 times about your book. A post can be your opinion, something you like about the book a specific character or event, it can even be a question. Please be careful not to give away any spoilers or endings. Post at least once in June and once in July making sure you have posted twice before school starts. (In other words, don’t wait until August)

  • Reply to at least two posts by other students. Always be respectful in your posts say something meaningful.  Just saying “I agree” or “good point” don’t mean much and won’t be counted.

  • If you are checking, yes, you need a total of 6 entries on the blog 4 posts and 2 comments.

For the Summer Experience---

  • Post pictures and describe somewhere you went over the summer. This could be as simple as a local museum or a hike in one of the nearby California State Parks.  Some of you may be fortunate to travel out of the area if so pick one of the places you visit and tell us about it.  Don’t forget to post a picture too!

    1. I am currently reading the book called "A Long Walk to Water." This book has two stories in it. One of the stories is about a girl who walked 8 hours just to find her family. The other story is about a boy who waked 7 years walking away from a war trying to find his family. The author did a really good job giving good details and was very descriptive. I definitely recommend this book.

    3. I just finished reading The Girl from Felony Bay, and I absolutely loved the book. The author wrote it so well and the main character Abbey is so strong willed and will settle for nothing less then the truth. When I begun reading the story I was not to captivated for the first few chapters, but as the story progressed I couldn’t put the book down.

  2. I am reading The Thing About Jellyfish. So far the book seems really well written. It keeps me wanting to read more. I really like how it explains how Suzy feels when she finds out that her best friend died. I also like it
because it really feels like you're right there with Suzy, for example when at the beginning she is at the aquarium, it felt like you were right next to her reading the signs and watching her class.

  4. I am reading FAR FROM THE TREE. I predict at the end of the story all of the biological family will come together, including the mom! First, Grace one of the main characters was told she has two biological siblings. One is a girl and the other is a boy. Grace then emailed Maya. Which is her biological sister and said, "My mom and dad told me about you today, and I have to admit that I'm kind of in shock, but excited, too." At this point Maya and Grace families met and had dinner. Maya and Grace talked about there life's and about there biological brother, Joaquin. Then they decided to email him and say "You don't now me, but I think we share some family. Would you be interested in meeting up with us?" Joaquin saw the email a couple weeks after and said, "Ya that's cool." So they all met up (Grace, Maya, and Joaquin) and talked about how different life's they have. They also found out that they ALL like mayonnaise with their French fries! I don't have an opinion about the story yet but I enjoy reading it. I think the author did a really good job of writing this book because is very clear.

    1. I am also reading this book, and I also have the same prediction! I do think eventually all of the kids will be with their mother, but I am no sure they will all agree at first. I mean she never went to her visits to see Joaquin so that might have upset him. I also think Maya may not want to because she might not want to go back to that tough time. Finally, I think Grace will want to see her mother because she was the one to come up with meeting up with her siblings. I agree the author did a great job writing the book and making it very clear. Overall, I really enjoy reading this book.

  9. The book I am reading "The Mysterious Benedict Society Book #1." I have greatly enjoyed this book so far. Reynie Muldoon, the main character of the book, is a very intelligent child who lives in an orphanage. One day he sees an ad requesting intelligent children to come take a test. Being curious he goes to check it out where he meets other intelligent children. The other main characters are very different from Reynie but similar in many ways. This book shows how friends can come in different ways or forms.

    5. I think even though he is the bad guy, Mr. Curtain is probably my favorite character. I say this because of the image the book puts in my head when they describe him. I imagine that the wheelchair is like so high-tech (which it is, but still) and then I imagine his face with grey glasses that completely block his eyes and for some reason, in my mind he is always frowning. I forget if this was in the description, but I also picture him with grey spiky hair that is all over the place. I like it because he sounds crazy but I also like how he creates crazy inventions. (especially in books after this)

  10. I am reading Pax. Let me tell you how Pax and Peter are inseparable. First, Pax waits at the spot they left him. This shows inseparableness because Pax is waiting on the side of a road for Peter to come back. As a reader I can feel the connection they have. The next way they show inseparableness is that Peter is walking 200 miles to see Pax. If this isn't inseparableness I don't now what is. To walk 200 miles to see a animal is insane. As a reader you can feel the connection these two have in two major ways. In conclusion Peter and Pax are inseparable.

  12. I am reading the book Ghost by Jason Reynolds. It is a book about a boy named Castle Cranshaw that goes by the nickname Ghost who has a hard life at home, but finds a track team that might help him with his struggles. Ghost is an exceptionally fast runner and he is very good at track, but he can not afford running shoes or clothes, which makes school and track harder because people bully him about it. Track is Ghost´s way of running away from his struggles. So far in the book, I have really enjoyed it. It has kept me entertained because of the suspension and good story line. I predict that Ghost will get bullied more and get into more trouble by the end of the book, but I think he will preserver and track will help him with that. 17. One of the books I read was Brown Girl Dreaming, an autobiography, by Jacqueline Woodson. I liked this book because it told me what happened in the 60’s and 70’s. It also told me about her life, as an African American girl, and the struggles she had to go through to get to where she is. One of her challenges was losing her grandpa because he was more of a dad than a grandfather to her. Another struggle was that her family moved from South Carolina where her grandparents lived to New York City and she missed her grandparents a lot. I found this book very interesting.

  18. I am currently reading THE GIRL FROM FELONY BAY. when I first started to read this book I made a few observations, one of them being that it was a bit slow developing. Because it was slow developing the first 2 or 3 chapters really worked on character development and building up the background of the storyline . Another thing that I noticed about this book is that while reading it I was comparing the girls life to mine. While yes, our lives may be nothing alike it really put my life and all of my minor in perspective. There is so much I have to be grateful for that a lot of people my age do not have the privilege of having. overall I am really excited to dig deeper into this book and so far I would absolutely recommend this book to a friend.

The vocabulary in this book is also very diverse. From the movies and books I've seen and read in the past this is a very accurate description of the civil rights act. Jacqueline was a very imaginative person and wrote poems and stories. This is just after Jim Crow laws so her grandparents made her and her brother and sister sit in the back of the bus. 31. This Summer I am reading a book called "The Mysterious Benedict Society." (What a mouthful). The book does a real good job of building a sense of wonder and mystery without looking like a cheap Harry Potter knockoff you find on Wish.com. My favorite part of the book, however, is its colorful characters. The main character, Reynie, is a bright young boy who doesn't even know what he's being thrown into, even the people involved in this mysterious project keep a mystery, but he would do anything to escape his current circumstances. He's also likable and relatable, and so are the other characters, but I won't spoil them here. So I would definitely recommend The Mysterious Benedict Society. Even if you don't want to read it, supposedly there's a new T.V. show about it out now. I won't watch it until I finish the book to avoid spoilers. Hooray.

I thought that Ghost, the main character was going to get bullied more and get into more trouble, but the bullying actually went down in the second half of the book and he in fact, did not get himself into more trouble. Ghost did get closer with his teammates and Coach though. He got to know a little more about Coach, who was the coach of the track team he was on. I would recommend the book Ghost. It was entertaining, suspenseful, and I could easily visualize what was going on in the book. Especially in the last chapter, I felt like I was there with the characters in the book. 37. I just finished the book Loot: How to Steal a Fortune by Jude Watson. At the beginning of the book, March McQuin’s father, a jewel thief, falls from a roof and his last words are “Find jewels.” Or so March thought, soon he finds out his father is talking about Jules, his long, lost sister. When he meets her, they have the biggest adventure of their lives. This was a very good book and I would recommend it to anyone who loves adventure, suspense, and con artists.

  39. I just finished reading the book Far From The Tree and I really enjoyed the book and how it always made me want to keep reading. I think the author did a great job of writing it and really helped me imagine how all of the siblings felt at all different times of the book. My favorite character in the book was Maya because she always knew what she wanted and when she did not want to do something she always stuck true to what she wanted. I also really enjoyed her humor in this book because even through tough times she always managed to lighten the mood with one of her jokes. Overall I thought this book was very entertaining and informing so I would definitely recommend this book!

  40. I just finished the book "Scythe" by Neal Shusterman. I would recommend this book to people who like dystopian novels and thrillers because while I did enjoy this book, I also found it very dark. While reading Scythe, I was constantly surprised. This book was suspenseful, entertaining, and difficult to put down. The main characters, Citra and Rowan, never failed to do the right thing. I really liked Citra because I found her character relatable and I thought she was the smartest character in the book. Both characters were compassionate and clever, and I am sure they would both make great Scythes. Scythe was a very well written book, and I look forward to starting Thunderhead, the second book of the series. I hope others will read this book and like it as well.

  46. There are three main themes in the novel Pax by Sara PennyPacker. The first theme is adventure. Peter travels 200 miles to find Pax. He faces problems with nature along the way. Personally I like adventurous books because it makes me want to keep reading. Another theme is dedication. Pax and Peter are dedicated to see each other so they do whatever it takes to see each other. Pax and Peter are so dedicated to see each other that on the way to see each other they face obstacles and as a reader I felt like I was with them on the journey. The last theme is teamwork. This book shows teamwork because Vola helps Peter heal his leg. Also Pax, Grey, Bristle, and Runt all show teamwork. The theme of teamwork made me appriciate it in general. The three themes PennyPacker uses in the novel Pax all combine and make a great novel to read.

The first book in the series is called Among the Hidden. This book is about a boy named Luke who is a third child in a world where they are not allowed. The only punishment is death. One day, Luke sees a face in one of the neighbors windows. The neighbor already has 2 children so this has to be a third child! Just like Luke. This book is about if Luke risks everything to get involved in the other third child’s plans, or if he decides to hide in his attic for the rest of his life. Most of this can be found in the back of the book so I would not consider it a spoiler. -Elias Duran

Throughout the book their relationship builds, the thing is they have to keep a 6 feet distance, no exceptions. As they spend more time with each other 6 feet feels like a punishment. 63. I have started The Lord of the Rings. This book (at least my version) is 6 books combined into one. Which makes 998 pages. Not even 1000. I am excited to read this book because it will take me a lot longer to finish this book rather than say a 300 page book which I will finish in maybe 2-3 days if I put my mind to it. I am happy about that because it is a book that I can read for a while. So far, the book is about a hobbit (basically a miniature version of a human) named Bilbo having a his eleventy first birthday. (111 and Hobbits age differently) in the end of his birthday he disappears using a magic ring he found. Then he leaves for good and gives everything to his younger cousin (I’m confused because since he is so much younger, he should be a nephew) Frodo. Since Frodo is at the coming of age of 33, he is allowed to inherit everything. He also gives Frodo the magic ring. Then (this is like 20 years later and Frodo is 50 now)the wizard Gandalf comes and tells Frodo about the ring’s horrible power. It is a ring that will consume his spirit and drive him insane into thinking that the ring is the only important thing in the world. Frodo thought it just turned him invisible. I could go on, but I don’t want to make the post too long. So far this is a great book full of vivid explanations. -Elias

  66. I read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This book is about a girl living in Germany during World War Two. At first, it was slow and honestly kind of boring, but once I got more into it, I really liked this book. My favorite characters were Liesel, the main character, and Rudy, her best friend. They were a perfect duo. They were both brave, strong, bold, and smart. I liked whenever they would steal books from the mayor's wife's library, adding to Liesel's favorite thing, her book collection. The charcter development between the two characters was really good, and reading about how they changed throughout the years the book takes place in was great. Another one of my favorite parts was when Liesel read the book that Max, another character, wrote and left for Liesel. Reading about how they came to be friends was another good part. 70. During summer I read The Lightning Thief. The Lightning Thief is a book about a 12- year-old boy named Percy Jackson. Percy Jackson seems to get into trouble a lot. Each year he gets in so much trouble that he gets expelled from school. Because of this Percy doesn’t think very much of himself, but his Mom and his friend Grover do. Percy has a good relationship with both of them. When Percy and his Mom go on a trip, a Minotaur, which is a really big monster, attacks both of them. Percy thinks the Minotaur kills his Mom, so he spends a lot of time trying to figure out how to kill the Minotaur.

  71. For my second post, I wanted to share some additional information about The Lightning Thief. Once I finished the book, I learned that the reason why Percy Jackson was getting into so much trouble at school is because he actually had dyslexia and also had ADHD. Once he realized that he wasn’t a bad kid and that these were things that happen to people, he started to feel better about himself. But because of these things, he got into trouble because he was impulsive and sometimes acted without thinking through things. This is a really good book and if you choose to read it, I hope you enjoy learning about Percy.

  73. The novel by John Ritter, "The boy who Saved Baseball" ends in a sorrowful tone with one of the team's big role models dying. The team coming off the big win to save the town is now a mere thought. Now all the focus is on doc's death and funeral. Doc's death left the team wondering if he even saw the final inning when they won the game and celebrated the big win. I thought this book was a great book to read because it had a great rhythm that was at the perfect pace and always had a smooth transition from one setting to the next and that is one of reasons I really like this novel.

  78. I just got halfway through the book The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater. The 57 Bus is a true story about a non-binary person that goes by Sasha and a boy named Richard. At first, the book has a chapter on just Sasha´s life and then on Richard´s life. I liked how I got to know about each of the main characters of the book before the plot unravels. After school there are two buses that take people home. One is the 57 bus. One day on the bus Sasha is sleeping and Richard is with his friends messing around. Richard´s friend Jamal hands him a lighter and tells Richard to light Sasha´s skirt on fire. Sasha is non-binary, but the boys thought they were a man in a skirt, which is why Richard lit their skirt on fire. After this happens, Sasha is burnt badly and has to get surgery and Richard might have to go to jail. My predictions are that Sasha will get the surgery and will end up alright and Richard will have to go to jail for what he did.

The ending of the book was not what I expected it to be which was a twist. I really liked how in each chapter it shows the perspectives of the Pax and Peter back and fourth. Overall this boom was very interesting and I would rate it a 8/10.

  97. After reading the book "i am not your perfect mexican daughter" i realized that julia's life is just like a regular normal teenager. She made me realize that life isn't always perfect like some people make it seem. it really made me visualize that its important to do the things you've always wanted to do because once you're older you may regret not doing those things. The book also showed me that we arent perfect and we may have our ups and downs and that's ok.overall the book "i am not your perfect mexican daughter" really inspired me.

  98. I just finished reading The Toll by Neal Shusterman. This is the last book in the Scythe series. I enjoyed this series and would highly recommend it. This book follows the lives of Scythe Anastasia, the Toll, and Scythe Faraday. I loved how the author gives the reader insight into different characters' perspectives. However, one complaint I had was that in this book, the different character's thoughts occurred in different periods of time. I liked the first two books more than this one, but not enough to not recommend this series.

  99. Right now I have just begun my second book. "The Mysterious Benedict Society #2," I am greatly looking forward to where the children's journey continues this time. I really enjoyed the first book so I predict that I will like this one even more. I wonder if the evil Mr. Curtain will fulfill his plan this time or if the the children will thwart his plan stumping him once again.

  100. I finished reading "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter," this was a interesting book, it had many challenges that Julia had to a face. Like keeping her sisters baby a secret, although that is not a normal experience that teenagers have to face, for a girl her age, I think she handled it well, but at the same time did not, she thought about how he mother and father might have reacted to this news that two of their family members died that day, not one. but on the other hand, she wanted to tell them, because she thought how it might affect her parents later on in life, learning that they might have had a grandchild, but she ended up not telling them. In my opinion I think she should have told them, only because I feel if they found out later on, they would be scarred for life, now I have seen how my family has dealt with loss, so I just take that into account. I strongly feel that you should read this book.-Alessa Villacorta

  103. I just finished reading "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" by Suzanne Collins. I loved how the author showed the growth of not only the protagonists, but the antagonists as well. This book is a prequel to the Hunger Games series, and I think the author did a wonderful job of explaining how things came to be in this dystopian future. I recommend this book because it was a page-turner and made the early life of the infamous President Snow a lot more amazing than I ever could have imagined.

This book is a more modern version of “Pride and Prejudice” and it is about a girl named Elizabeth Bennet who is trying to become a barrister for her dad’s law firm. One major challenge that she faces is trying to prove to her dad that she should be the barrister. She tries to prove this by investigating a murder that happened in her town, where she thinks they have arrested the wrong person. Along the way, she meets new people and many new characters are introduced. I like this book so far because it is exciting and mysterious, which makes me more eager to keep reading it.
